A world of Symbols

When we look around us, we see symbols everywhere. We see company logos that illustrate the purpose/mission of the company. We see people’s names that have been promoted to the level of national and international symbols. We see the stories and historical events that have become symbols of power, peace, good life… We see various religions and churches with specific symbols that make them easily identifiable in our society.

In the cybersecurity world, lots of symbols are adopted to help pass messages and pull our attention to key security aspects. For example:

Padlock 🔒 – Represents security, encryption, and safe access.

Shield 🛡️ – Symbolizes defense against cyber threats.

Firewall 🔥 – Indicates a protective barrier against unauthorized access.

We are all surrounded by symbols some of them good, some bad, some significant, some of no value and some not recognized depending on our belief, origin, background…

In a world of symbols, it is hard to know the ones that are really crucial for our life. This is a very important point as we are highly influenced by the symbols that are presented to us and most of the time, our life path is determined by the symbols we decide to follow.

It is always good to get the history of the symbols we see around us. Most of the time, this history we reveal the real significance of the symbols, thus helping you to make the right decision on the entity the symbol is representing. I made this exercise and was chocked on the real meaning of widely accepted symbols. We need to be very careful when adopting a symbol!

As you can see, symbols shape our perceptions, influence beliefs, and guide decisions—whether secular or spiritual. But there is one symbols above all the others. This symbol is the Cross! The cross stands out because it embodies both history and deep personal faith.

The symbol of the CROSS

One of the most prominent symbols in the world is the cross. The cross is seen everywhere. People wear it, it is found in public places, it is found in most books talking of religion, it is found in the Christian churches, it is found everywhere! Also, you see all types of crosses with various shapes and origin.

I am a cross collector, and I can tell you that I have hundreds of crosses of different shapes and “complications”. But why is the cross so prominent around us? Why are there so many writings on the cross? Why is the cross either very well accepted or fiercely fought against?

The answer to these questions can be found in the Word of God and the fact that the Cross origin is of God!

The Bible presents the cross as a profound symbol of sacrifice, redemption, and divine love. It is central to Christian faith, representing Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and the salvation of humanity.

  • Sacrifice & Atonement – Jesus bore the sins of the world on the cross, fulfilling prophecy and offering redemption to believers (1 Peter 2:24). We are all in need of redemption because we are originally sinners and NO works can take any our sins but the Cross!

  • Love & Grace – The cross is a testament to God’s love, as Christ willingly gave His life for sinners (Romans 5:8). The cross is the ultimate symbol of love. Before we knew Christ, He gave His life so we can be saved!

  • Victory Over Sin – Through His death and resurrection, Jesus conquered sin and death, granting eternal life to those who believe (Galatians 2:20). Our goal on earth is to have eternal life with God in His kingdom! Well, the Cross demonstrates the power of Christ as he conquered death and is today seating on the right hand of His Father! The cross gives us power to fight EVERY evil that may be on our way!

  • Personal Transformation – Christians are called to take up their own cross, symbolizing humility, obedience, and faith (Philippians 3:10). Yes, the cross is full of power, but it also symbolizes humility, obedience, and faith! Remember that Jesus went through all the humiliation and pain before dying. He did all of this for us. We also have to be humble and wear the symbol of humility: the Cross!

The cross is a powerful spiritual truth that is shaping and shall continue to shape lives not just in the Christian realm but everywhere. Romans 5:8 – "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." illustrates the power of the cross and Galatians 6:14"May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world." reminds us of the fact that we are everything only when we are with the Cross!
